Canadian dollar hits a three-year high

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — The Canadian dollar rose to a new three-year high against its U.S. counterpart on Thursday, with demand for the the U.S. unit falling as equities gained. At its intraday best, the Canadian dollar /quotes/comstock/21o!x:susdcad USDCAD +0.0630% strengthened 0.8% against the greenback from Wednesday’s close, with one U.S. dollar purchasing 94.52 Canadian cents, a level not seen since November 2007. The loonie, however, gave back some of its earlier-day gains following the release of a report showing Canadian retail sales rebounding at a slower-than-expected pace.
